Museum Acquires Rare Collection of Early Photography
We are delighted to announce the acquisition of the prestigious Gutierrez-Solana Collection, comprising 340 photographs dating from 1870 to 1935, representing a significant addition to our permanent holdings.
The collection includes works by pioneering photographers who documented Spain’s transformation during a period of profound social and artistic change. Among the highlights are 23 previously unknown albumen prints by Charles Clifford, photographer to Queen Isabel II.
A Window Into History
These photographs offer an intimate view of daily life, architecture, and landscape during one of Spain’s most dynamic periods. From the construction of Madrid’s Gran Via to village festivals in rural Castilla, the images capture a nation in transition.
Public Display
Selected works from the collection will be displayed for the first time as part of our upcoming “Light and Shadow” exhibition. The full collection will be digitized and made available through our online archive by summer 2026.
